The LMU Lions are riding high today after an impressive victory over the rival Chapman Panthers. This marks the fourth straight victory for the lions, with five out of their last six games won. Despite a disappointing start to the season, LMU is peaking at the right time and looks poised to make run towards the playoffs.
Chapman came out of the gates firing, scoring the first goal and eventually took a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter. The Lions soon came firing back, rattling off three goals to end the half with the momentum on their side. The first half could have easily gotten away from Loyola, but Junior Jaime Caulkins (3g) and Sophomore James Hinkamp (2g) chipped in with key goals to finish up a strong second quarter.
The second half belonged to the Lion’s defense. The ball seemed to be in Chapman’s possession for much of the third and fourth quarters. However, the D responded well and didn’t seem to tire. Junior Jason Hale led the defense by shutting out the WCLL’s leading goal scorer, Marcus Wooden, for the first time all season. Junior Luga Podesta stopped fourteen shots and was able to make great clearing passes all day through the Chapman defense.
Going into the fourth quarter, the game was all knotted up, 7-7. Chapman took the lead with 5 minutes left to go in the game, and attempted to run out the clock after regaining possession during the face-off. After a Chapman turnover, the ball was thrown down the field in the direction of Panther’s goalie Daniel Kirkpatrick. As he bent down for the ball, Sophomore Brian Minkler (2a) crushed Kirkpatrick, picked up the loose ball and made a perfect assist to the streaking Freshman Greg Ewert (1g, 1a) to tie the game 8-8, with about one minute and thirty seconds left in the game. After another Chapman turnover, LMU made it down field giving them enough time to win the game. With thirteen seconds left, Sophomore John Kiper (2g) scored his second game winner in a row off of the assist from Sophomore Matt Stapleton (1a).
With by far their most impressive victory this season, the Lions now prepare for USC at Leavey Field next Sunday. LMU is playing their best ball right now, and seem prepared to finish the regular season strong.

Andrew Stack was especially impressive netting 2 key goals.

The Lions fought hard against 24th ranked Arizona State on Saturday, but failed to come away with the victory, losing the contest 11-7. The LMU offense took the momentum early in the first quarter, jumping out to a 3-1 lead. They continuously got shots on goal all game, showing their capability of being a strong offensive team. Freshman Tim Ury (4g) had another outstanding game while Sophomores Brian Minkler (1g, 2a) and Andrew Stack (1g, 1a) and Junior Jaime Caulkins (2a) helped give a constant stability to the attack. Going into the fourth quarter of the game, the Lions were only down 8-7 after numerous lead changes throughout the match.
For LMU, the game was lost in the fourth quarter. Despite Junior Luga Podesta’s 18 saves, the defense couldn’t stop Arizona State’s weapons. The Lions had consistent problems with communication and ground balls on defense, and made a few mistakes towards the end of the game that could not be overcome. Despite the end result, LMU can come away from the contest knowing they can compete with the tough competition of the WCLL. With the young offense coming around and a talented defense filled with leaders, the Lions know they can rebound this weekend against another tough opponent in UCSD.

The LMU Lions snuck past the Pepperdine Waves in the USLIA season opener on Sunday in Malibu. With four lead changes, the game looked to go either way until Freshman Tim Ury (2g, 2a) tied the game with 7:11 left in the fourth. From then on, the Lions never looked back as they finished the game with two more unanswered goals, vaulting them to an 8-6 victory. While the offense struggled to find consistency during parts of the game, they were still able to showcase their young talent and explosiveness during the fourth quarter. Sophomore Brian Minkler (1g, 1a), Junior Jaime Caulkins (1g, 1a), and Sophomore Brandon Sassone (1g, 1a) were all instrumental in the Lion’s victory.
As expected, the LMU defense rose to the occasion by holding Pepperdine to only six goals. Junior goaltender, Luga Podesta, came up big with 17 saves, while the starting defense of Juniors James Kaen, Jason Hale, and Andrew Llama suffocated the Waves’ offense all day long. Also, the Lions didn’t give up one goal on six attempts from Pepperdine’s man-up squad. LMU looks to correct a few problems on offense and continue playing well on defense for this weekend’s game against a tough Arizona State team in Tempe.
